Indian Jewelry gears up for Totaled

Indian Jewelry, a Houston noise band which revels in being strange and, well, noisy (just look at that cover art), will soon release a new album, its third, for We Are Free/Monitor Records.
The album, Totaled, was written and recorded last year by founding members Tex Kerschen and Erika Thrasher (can’t fault these names) in Houston and Los Angeles. A press release describes the album’s sounds as a combination of earlier albums, including 2003’s We are the Wild Beast, 2005’s Invasive Exotics, and 2008’s Free Gold.

‘Gold jewellery business may grow by 30 p.c. during ‘Akshaya Tritiya’

Gold jewellery business is expected to grow by up to 30 per cent during Akshaya Tritiya, a festival considered auspicious for buying the metal, against the year-ago period on increased consumer confidence, a market expert said here on Monday.
“We are hoping that Akshaya Tritiya, to be celebrated on May 16, will increase gold jewellery business by 25-30 per cent compared to the previous year,” All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation (GJF) Director Sumesh Wadhera said.
He said, while gold prices have more or less stabilised at Rs. 16,500-17,000 per ten grams, the consumer confidence to buy jewellery has also improved.
Gold was on Monday trading at Rs. 16,463 per ten grams on the futures market, while it was at Rs. 16,745 per ten grams on the spot market in Delhi. In the international market, the precious metal stood at USD 1,103.80 an ounce (28.34 grams).
Mr. Wadhera said, the rise in customs duty is just Rs. 100 per 10 grams and will not have much impact on domestic demand.
The government had raised customs duty on gold and platinum to Rs 300 per ten grams from Rs 200 per ten grams in the Union Budget 2010-11.
He said the overall Indian jewellery market is likely to grow by 10-12 per cent, while in the southern region, growth is expected to rise by up to 25 per cent.
Eight-ten per cent growth in gold jewellery business is expected for the south Indian region, while 18-20 per cent for branded and diamond jewellery, Mr. Wadhera added.

Bulgari slumped into net loss in 2009: company

Italian luxury jeweller Bulgari said on Monday it fell into a net loss of E47 million ($A70.52 million) last year and its turnover plunged 13.8 per cent to E926.6 million euros ($A1.39 billion).
The top-end jewellery and luxury goods maker had made a profit of E82.9 million euros ($A124.38 million) in 2008.
"It is important to note that sales increased over the year," from a 30.6 per cent drop in the first quarter to a 2.7 per cent dip in the fourth quarter, Bulgari said in a statement.
Turnover in Europe was down by 16.7 per cent, in the Americas by 31.6 per cent and in Japan by 22.9 per cent.
For the rest of the world, including the Middle East, turnover was up 12.2 per cent.
Bulgari also noted that sales were up by 3.3 per cent for the year at its own stores, while suffering at other outlets, notably department stores that massively reduced their stocks in the face of the global economic downturn.
"The financial results of 2009 were heavily affected by the global crisis in the financial markets and its effects on demand for goods and services," Bulgari's chief executive officer Francesco Trapani said in the statement.
Noting that the first two months of 2010 "showed a high single-digit increase in turnover," Trapani predicted that "we can reasonably expect a mid-single-digit increase in turnover" for the year.
The board of directors proposed a dividend of five euro cents per share, the statement said.

Jewellery, base metals lead export growth

Exports from Dubai (excluding free zone trade and re-exports) rose by $2.66 billion (Dh9.77bn) in 2009 year-on-year, thus registering a 22 per cent rise over 2008, Dubai Statistics Centre (DSC) figures showed yesterday. Simultaneously, the emirate registered a decline in imports and re-exports. The export figures were led by jewellery and base metals, according to figures from Dubai Export Development Corporation (DEDC).
An official at DEDC termed the trend as "maturing" of Dubai's economy, which suggests the growth of the emirate as a "manufacturing hub". The new figures come after the emirate began tapping markets in South America for exports.
"Dubai's exports have increased because its firms are globally competitive and able to effectively penetrate new markets while extending the reach of existing ones," said Saed Mohamed Al Awadi, CEO, DEDC.
"The data shows that traditional markets of South Asia and the Gulf Co-operation Council states are important but at the same time new markets have been developed," he said.
"A decline in imports and a rise in exports suggest that more and more value addition is being done in the emirate," a Dubai-based analyst said. According to available data, the emirate exported jewellery worth $32.9bn in 2009, base metals (primarily aluminium) worth $4.2bn, edibles worth $3.5bn, minerals worth $2.2bn and plastics worth $2.66bn. The corresponding figures for re-exports were $45.4bn for jewellery, $3.8bn for base metals, $1.99bn for food, $386 million for minerals and $2.9bn for plastics.
Till the third quarter, most of Dubai exports headed towards South and West Asia, GCC countries, Western Europe, the Middle East and North Africa and Africa, according to DSC. In percentage terms, while the export of jewellery and foodstuff had shown a constant rise, base metals fell in the third quarter, DSC figures showed.
"Dubai is without doubt the region's sourcing hub and as such it re-exports substantial volumes of base metals and plastics," said Al Awadi. "Re-exports of base metals reached Dh3.8bn while plastics were at Dh2.9bn. Exports were at Dh4.2bn and Dh2.66bn for base metals and plastics, respectively. Dubai is fortunate to have globally competitive firms."

Diamond bought for record $35.3m

A rare, uncut diamond has achieved a record sale price at an auction in South Africa.

The Cullinan Heritage diamond, which was discovered last year, was sold for $35.3m (£23.1m) to a Hong Kong-based jewellery company.

The 507-carat gem is one of the largest diamonds ever discovered.

Petra, the mining company that discovered the diamond, said the price reflected the gem's rare combination of size and exceptional clarity.

"It has the potential to produce one of the world's most important polished gems," said Petra's chief executive Johan Dippenaar.

It is not known what the buyer - the Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Company - plans to do with the diamond.

The diamond was found at the Cullinan mine in South Africa - a known source of some of the world's largest diamonds.

A 168-carat stone was also discovered along side it, as well as one of 58 carats and another of 53 carats.

The largest diamond to be discovered, named the Cullinan, was 3,106 carats.

It was cut into nine separate stones, some of which form part of the British Crown Jewels.

Budget takes the sheen off gold, silver, platinum

For those who value gold either for jewellery or as investment, the Budget has given them a nasty surprise. The Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, has proposed to hike the Customs duty on gold and platinum imports by Rs 100 for 10 gram to Rs 300. For silver, the duty has been increased by Rs 500 to Rs 1,500 a kg.
The hike has come at a time when the industry has begun to witness a revival in gold imports from January even as precious metal prices have turned volatile in the recent months.
Gold imports declined sharply last year. In 2009, gold imports declined 19 per cent to 339.8 tonnes from 2008 on the back of record prices, according to Bombay Bullion Association data.
Gold import in January rose to 37 tonnes against 27 tonnes in December. It was 30 tonnes in November. In October, however, gold's arrival into the country was 48 tonnes on good demand from retail jewellers.
Mr Vasant Mehta, Chairman, Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council, said the local consumption of gold and silver jewellery may go down owing to the increase in excise duty and this in turn may affect the skilled workers from the sector.
“The cost of manufacturing would increase as compared to the competitive countries as the government has not extended the two per cent subvention to the industry and affect the exports from the country,” he said.
Mr Prithviraj Kothari, Chairman, Riddhi Siddhi Bullions, said the demand for gold has already halved due to high prices and imports are expected to come down in the coming months.
Sop for Rhodium
The government has reduced customs duty on rhodium – a precious metal used for polishing jewellery – to two per cent from 10 per cent.
The Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, said: “To encourage domestic refining capacity for gold, I propose to reduce the basic customs duty on gold ore and concentrates from two per cent ad valorem to a specific duty of Rs 140 for 10 grams of gold content with full exemption from special additional duty.” Further, the excise duty on refined gold made from such ore or concentrate is being reduced from eight per cent to a specific duty of Rs 280 per 10 grams.
Mr Mehul Choksi, CMD, Gitanjali Group, said the reduction of duty on rhodium and raw gold is a welcome move.

The union's 27 leaders vowed "determined and coordinated action if needed to safeguard the financial stability in the euro area as a whole".
"The lack of specific detail on any support that might be provided by the EU is disappointing financial markets," said Neil MacKinnon, economist at Russian investment bank VTB Capital.
"The euro is weaker this morning and is likely to test last Friday's low," he added.
In recent weeks, the single currency has been hit by concerns about rocky public finances in the eurozone -- particularly in peripheral members Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain.
Last Friday, the single currency had tumbled to 1.3586 dollars -- which was the lowest level since May 20, 2009.
"Without specific detail of any (EU) support package (for Greece), there is risk that the eurozone debt crisis escalates which could easily turn into a currency crisis," MacKinnon warned.

The head of the group of 16 countries that share the euro currency, Luxembourg premier Jean-Claude Juncker, on Thursday dismissed the possibility of Greece defaulting on its debts.
The prospect of a default has stalked markets for weeks, with the cost of borrowing shooting through the roof for Athens, but Juncker told reporters after a European Union summit that such an outcome "need not be envisaged."
Juncker added that should Europe end up facing such an extreme scenario, national leaders would invoke a "coordinated reaction."

Meanwhile in Germany, official data showed Friday that the nation's economy failed to grow in the fourth quarter of 2009, marking a pause in the European heavyweight's recovery.
"The recovery of the German economy lost momentum at the end of 2009," the Desatis office said in a statement.
The zero result compared with the previous quarter came after Germany posted growth of 0.7 percent in the third quarter of the year and an expansion of 0.4 percent in the three-month period from April to June.
"Attention is being distracted to some extent by the weak German GDP numbers this morning, and the resulting pressure on the euro," added Broux.
Europe's main stock markets rose slightly in morning trade on Friday, after overnight gains on Wall Street, with Frankfurt gaining 0.79 percent, London adding 0.58 percent and Paris winning 0.70 percent.
Wall Street stocks had rallied Thursday as sentiment was lifted by the EU pledge to help Greece stave off a debt crisis and better-than-expected US labor market data.
In Asia on Friday, markets were generally higher in quiet trade ahead of Sunday's Lunar New Year and the start of a week-long holiday in China.
Tokyo finished 1.29 percent higher but Hong Kong fell 0.11 in a late bout of profit-taking.
Heaping pressure on the euro, according to brokers, are speculators building up "short" positions in anticipation of deeper falls for the single currency if Greece's troubles spread further afield.

De Beers cuts debt, cautious after 2009 loss

LONDON (Reuters) - Top diamond producer De Beers bolstered its balance sheet on Thursday with a $1 billion rights issue and bank refinancing as it swung to a annual $220 million underlying loss after demand plummeted for luxury goods.
The company was cautious about the future and said output would only slightly rise in 2010 after halving last year.
"With the fragility of the world economy and perceived weakness of the global recovery post recession, the company would only expect a gradual increase in production levels, sales and prices," a statement said.
De Beers said 45-percent owner Anglo American Plc and two other shareholders confirmed they will pump more cash into the company after it was forced to shut mines last year during the downturn.
The group said in December that Anglo, South Africa's Oppenheimer family with a 40 percent stake and the Botswana government with the remaining 15 percent had agreed to a rights issue of up to $1 billion to cut its $4 billion of debt.
The group, which controls around 40 percent of the rough diamond market, said on Thursday banks had granted credit approval for the refinancing of a $1.5 billion facility after months of negotiations.
Profits were hit after the group slashed output in early 2009 and its biggest unit in Botswana shut down completely for several months when consumers shied away from buying luxury goods during the downturn.
De Beers moved to an underlying loss of $220 million in 2009 after underlying net profit of $515 million in 2008 while rough diamond sales tumbled to $3.2 billion from $5.9 billion.
Anglo said it would report an underlying loss of $90 million from its holding in De Beers. De Beers is a small part of Anglo, contributing about 5 percent of the group's operating profit in the past two years.

Gold steadies near $1,065; gains capped

TOKYO (Reuters) - Gold prices firmed on Monday in a technical bounce after falling to a three-month low late last week, when investors sold commodities on worries about fiscal stability in Greece and the broader euro zone.
Given the euro's bearish outlook despite the Group of Seven's reassurance on Greece at a weekend meeting in Canada, lower risk tolerance by investors is expected to support the dollar and weigh on gains for the precious metal, traders said.
Dollar strength often reflects risk aversion by investors and also makes dollar-priced commodities more expensive for holders of other currencies.
Although hot money was seen behind the recent sell-off in euro assets while bigger investors make cautious moves that do not depart from normal risk aversion patterns, the euro zone crisis has prompted a number of financial firms to revise their predictions for the euro.
"The unwinding of euro long positions from last year is set to continue for a while and is making it difficult for gold to rise further," said Kaname Gokon, deputy general manager at Okato Shoji Co's research section.
Spot gold was mostly flat at $1,065.95 per ounce, compared with New York's notional close of $1,065.55.
U.S. gold futures for April delivery were up 1.2 percent at $1,065.8 per ounce.
On Friday, spot gold fell to $1,043.75, its lowest since November 2.
The euro hit an 8- month low of $1.358 on Friday, and was trading around $1.3636 on Monday.
Euro long positions have been unwound in line with speculative long positions in gold as risk appetite fell in recent weeks, linked to China's credit tightening, concern about proposed trading regulations on U.S. banks and fiscal worries in the euro zone.
The latest data showed noncommercial net long U.S. gold futures positions fell for the third week in a row.
Such positions fell to 210,169 contracts in the week to February 2, down from 211,924 contracts a week earlier, according to the weekly Commitments of Traders report published by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
On the charts, gold is vulnerable to extending sharp losses to reach $1,020-1,030 an ounce if support at current levels fails to hold, and may face a deeper retracement below $1,000 if it breaks that level, technical analysts said.
Okato's Gokon echoed that view.
"We should prepare for an exodus of money from gold only if gold breaks through $1,000. But that is when the euro falls toward $1.32 and stock markets sink drastically," Gokon said.
A bright spot was that the holdings by the world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, SPDR Gold Trust, rose 1.828 tonnes or 0.2 percent to 1,106.378 tonnes on Friday, marking the first rise since last December.

City Jeweller Tells Of Violent £900k Raid

A jeweller has told of his ordeal at the hands of two robbers disguised as road workers who robbed him at knifepoint of goods worth more than £900,000.

John Haynes was opening his shop in the City of London when he was targeted by the pair, who sprayed a CS gas-like substance in his face.
He was marched at knifepoint to a safe and ordered to empty several trays of jewellery into a rucksack.
Detectives warned the public that some of the jewellery may be sold as Valentine's Day presents, after as many as 150 items were stolen in the Wednesday morning raid.
Among the pieces taken from the shop on St Michael's Alley, off Cornhill, were a £19,000 aquamarine diamond necklace, a £17,000 platinum ring and a £18,000 18-carat white gold and diamond bracelet with heart-shaped links.
Mr Haynes, 64, described the attack as "violent" and "well-planned".
"These guys rushed in through one of the doors into the shop, an opaque glass door, and knocked me over," he said.
"In almost one movement the man was on top of me and trying to spray my face with a can of something like mace.

"He threatened me and wanted to know where the security equipment was and produced a knife. I was convinced I was going to get cut to make me follow his instructions.
"He forced me through to the safe room and opened the door of the safe. While he was there with his rucksack I tipped all of the jewellery out of the storage trays, boxes and all, into his bag.
"Before he could start rifling another safe the look-out upstairs made some signal to him and he barked at me in a southern Irish brogue to 'Stay here.'
"He had a scarf over his mouth and all I was looking at was a nose and eyebrows."
The men left the shop within minutes and Mr Haynes, whose father founded the store in 1959, pressed a panic alarm.

Police said at least one of the men was dressed in a bright yellow fluorescent trousers and jacket. Detective Inspector Edelle Michaels, who is leading the inquiry, said: "I would appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area on Wednesday or in preceding days to get in touch.
"There is a chance that the robbers will try to sell these items. I'd ask anyone who is offered jewellery at knock-down prices in the coming days to contact the police.
"As Valentine's Day approaches, it's worth remembering that jewellery stolen at knifepoint is not a romantic gift."

2 stores pull necklaces on toxic cadmium concern

LOS ANGELES -- The teen fashion chain Aeropostale and outlet stores of upscale Saks Fifth Avenue have pulled from shelves necklaces that an environmental group's tests showed have high levels of the toxic metal cadmium.
Aeropostale, Inc. went one step further, saying Thursday that from now on, no amount of cadmium will be acceptable in its jewelry - and that suppliers will have to prove products are clean with independent lab testing.
The announcements are the latest fallout from an Associated Press investigation which last month reported some children's jewelry is contaminated with cadmium, a known carcinogen that also can harm bones and kidneys.
In response to that reporting, the California-based Center for Environmental Health tested adult jewelry bought at stores including Aeropostale and Saks' Off 5th outlets, and this week threatened to sue the retailers after lab results showed between 25 and 75 percent of the items' total weight was cadmium.
The announcement from Aeropostale was significant because it represented the first time a company has said it is effectively banning cadmium in adult jewelry. Aeropostale has more than 900 locations in the United States and Canada.
Cheap metal jewelry worn by children and typically imported from China has to date been the focus of reaction by federal regulators, lawmakers and retailers. Kids are of particular concern because they bite or suck on jewelry and thus are more likely to be exposed to any cadmium it contains.
What risk adults may face isn't clear. Typically the metal requires long-term exposure to cause problems. The amounts adults might ingest from cadmium-contaminated jewelry are presumably lower than children because the route into the body is less direct - microscopic amounts could shed onto the hands of an adult who handles a necklace, and then be ingested either during eating or putting a contaminated finger to the mouth.
Saks and Aeropostale came under scrutiny after the Center for Environmental Health took samples from products sold at a range of retailers. Tests determined that jewelry at four retailers, including Saks and Aeropostale, had high levels of the substance.
The item Aeropostale pulled was a men's necklace that the environmental group's testing showed had a circular pendant with high levels of cadmium. It was made in India.
"Aeropostale's top priority is our customers and the quality of our merchandise," the company said in a statement. "Customers can return the necklace to any Aeropostale store and we will safely dispose of it. Further, we have notified our vendors that, effective immediately, all jewelry must also be tested for cadmium, in addition to our existing testing protocols, at an independent lab. We will not accept any product that contains cadmium."
Saks Inc. offered little reaction on Tuesday, when the center released results of high-cadmium items that included a black-colored link necklace which sold for $69.99, marked down from $149.99 according to the label.
On Thursday, Saks' spokeswoman Julia Bentley said only 10 of the necklaces have been sold in California, but that "because of the CEH threat of a lawsuit" all 55 Off 5th stores nationally are pulling any remaining necklaces from shelves. Customers can return the item for a refund, Bentley said.
In its initial news release on the results, the Center for Environmental Health said the necklace was bought at Saks Fifth Avenue; Bentley said that Off 5th sold the item, and on Thursday center spokesman Charles Margulis confirmed that is where center staff bought it. Bentley would not say whether the necklace was ever sold at Saks Fifth Avenue stores.
Margulis said the nonprofit will pursue lawsuits regardless of whether stores pull items.
"We don't know what the rest of their inventory may or may not contain," Margulis said. "Our goal is a settlement that will cover all their products."
To get there, the center has threatened a lawsuit under a California law it used to set stringent limits on lead in both adult and children's jewelry. The settlement of a similar 2006 lawsuit was pivotal in national efforts to reduce lead levels in all metal jewelry sold in the United States.
There is no limit under federal law on cadmium in any jewelry - children's or adult - sold in the U.S.

In self-congratulations for landing a new job a while back, I bought my very first "big girl's" Coach bag. I got it at the outlet, it was half price and I still never spent that much on a handbag. I'm so glad I did it. It's typical for me to switch hangbags ever week, but I have to admit that I haven't used anything else but my new Coach since I've had it.

So it goes without saying that I do everything I can to make sure she says clean and in tip-top shape. Black & White Dress with a Colorful Cardigan

The forecast for this past Friday was in the mid to upper 70's, so I decided to take advantage of the warm weather and the casual Friday (unofficial) dress code and wore this:

I paired this basic white & black dress with a simple red cardigan. You guys know I LOVE cardigans, and Friday's weather was perfect cardigan-weather. I even gave my fave linen peep-toes another outing since it may be one of the last days of the year I can comfortably do so (without freezing my toes off).
